Generational Curses
keeping mercy and lovingkindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; but He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting (avenging) the iniquity (sin, guilt) of the fathers upon the children and the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations [that is, calling the children to account for the sins of their fathers]. Exodus 34:7, AMP.
You shall burn the carved and sculpted images of their gods in the fire. You shall not covet the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, so that you will not be ensnared by it [in a deadly trap], for it is an abomination (repulsive) to the Lord your God. You shall not bring an abomination (idol) into your house, and like it come under the ban (doomed to destruction); you shall utterly detest, and you shall utterly hate it, for it is something banned. Deuteronomy 7:25–26, AMP.
Generational curses can be created by any sin in our generational bloodline. We have to ask God to cleanse our bloodline and remove the curses from our lives. I have cast out many demons who made entry because of sins from the bloodline which sometimes go back many generations. Many times, the sin involves abuse, witchcraft, idolatry, shedding of innocent blood (murder/abortion), and/or violence. We are not praying for the forgiveness of the sin for the person who committed the sin, but rather asking for the Lord to cleanse our bloodline of that sin. We are repenting on behalf of our bloodline and asking for the curses that resulted from the sin to no longer be allowed to operate in our lives. When Jesus died on the cross, He broke the power of sin and death and took all curses upon Himself. However, we must ask Him to apply that freedom to our lives. In the same way, we must ask for salvation; it is not given without asking. We must ask Him to break the generational curses over our bloodlines and release us from the results of the curses. The below prayer can be used to pray for the curses to be broken.
Breaking Generational Curses
The generational curses can be broken by verbally praying the following prayer, but keep in mind this is just an outline to get you going, use your own words and spend time in prayer as the Lord leads.
“Lord God, I come before you now and ask that I may enter Your throne room and approach Your throne of grace and mercy. I give up all rebellion and all my sin, and I submit myself to You as my Lord and Savior. I confess all my sins before You and ask for Your forgiveness, especially for any sins that exposed me to a curse. I ask that You forgive me and my bloodline for the sin of____________. I pray you would cleanse this sin from my bloodline and release me from the consequences of my sin and my ancestors’ sin. I also ask, Jesus, that Your blood would flow over this sin, blot it out, make it null, void, and powerless. I pray that I will be forgiven so that the enemy can no longer use this sin as a legal right in my life. Jesus, I know You took upon Yourself every curse that could ever come upon me when you hung on the cross. I now ask You to set me free from every curse over my life in Your name, Lord Jesus Christ. I stand on faith that I am now released from the curse, and I thank You for Your freedom. I pray Your cross would now stand between me and any curses. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.”
Once we pray through breaking the generational curses off our lives, we can then ask the Lord to break them off the lives of our young children. If we have teen or adult children, they will need to pray to have them broken off their lives for themselves. If they are not in a place spiritually to do that, we can intercede and ask God to show them the truth and get them to a place of freedom for themselves. Intercession is a very powerful tool that we can use against the enemy in the lives of our children and other loved ones. We can pray for them to be released from the bondages of the enemy and for God to send warring angels to protect them and do spiritual warfare on their behalf. We can also bind and rebuke, in the name of Jesus, the enemy in their lives that is creating the bondage and hiding the truth from them. We can demand, in the name of Jesus, for the demons to take their hands off their eyes and out of their ears to allow them to see and hear God’s truth.
