Definition of Authority

The power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience

Authority given to us by Jesus

Jesus gave us authority over the enemy and His life was an example of how to walk in that authority.

Binding and Loosing

Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.Top of Form

Authority in His name

Philippians 2:9-11 For this reason also [because He obeyed and so completely humbled Himself], God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord (sovereign God), to the glory of God the Father.

This scripture is very clear. These signs should be accompanying all of those who believe in Him, but we do not see them often. People are sick and in bondage and often they have nowhere to turn for help. We should be laying hands on the sick and seeing them healed and we should be casting demons out of those who are in bondage. As Christians, that is part of who we are and what we all are all called to do.

Mark 16:17-18 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”

Authority over the Enemy

Luke 10:19-20 Listen carefully: I have given you authority [that you now possess] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and [the ability to exercise authority] over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will [in any way] harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”

I am reminded of what happens when a horse trainer is breaking a horse. At first the horse does everything it can to knock the trainer off. It bucks, runs, falls on the ground and anything else it can to get the rider off its back. After a little time it starts to calm down and pretty soon it accepts being dominated and led around by the bit in its mouth. It no longer does what it wants to do and that is the point it is broken. We sometimes do the same thing with the enemy. We get so tired of the fight that we give in and give up and allow the enemy to have his way in our lives.

If we really understood who we are in Jesus, we would never walk in fear of the enemy again. We would take a stand and never lose ground to the devil again. We do not have to be afraid of the enemy. He belongs under our feet and not in our lives tormenting us.

We are born into a world with an enemy whose only goal is to: kill us, steal from us, and destroy us. Whether we want to engage in the fight or not, we are in a war; we all are. The good news is, we can learn to defeat the enemy and stop letting him run all over us. We do not have to be reactionary/defense. We can go on the offense and take back our territory that the enemy has stolen from us. We can be the ones to draw the line in the sand and say no more.

Take back with the Enemy Stole

What has the enemy taken from you? Your peace, joy, health, family, sound mind or faith? Take it back. It is time to take back everything he has stolen from us. It is time to walk in the promises of God and walk in victory against the enemy.

What has God promised you?

When He set the Israelites free from Pharaoh, He performed miracles. He did all the work, and they were able to just walk right out of the hands of their enemy. He literally parted the Red Sea for them to walk out of bondage. When they made it to their Promised Land, I think they probably thought it would be just as easy. When they looked at their promise all they could see was the giants and they became full of fear. It was too hard, and the fight was too great. They got their eyes off the promise and could only focus on the obstacles to their promise.

How many times do we do that exact same thing? God gives us a promise but at the first obstacle we turn back because it is too hard. God taught them how to get free and then He placed their promise in front of them and said go take it. He has given us the keys and authority to go take our Promised Land and now we need to pick up the keys and go to battle.

How to Take the Promised Land

We must use the authority given to us by Jesus to take our Promised Land. We can use weapons of warfare to drive him off our land. Some of the weapons are the name of Jesus, the blood of Jesus, verbally speaking the Word of God (Scriptures), praise and worship, and binding and rebuking in the name of Jesus.

How to Walk in Authority

The number one way to walk in authority is right living with Jesus. We cannot use His name if we are not surrendered and living for Him. (Acts 19:11-20) We must be fully surrendered and living our lives fully for Him to walk in full victory in any area of our lives.

Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs] but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].

1 John 3:8 The one who practices sin [separating himself from God, and offending Him by acts of disobedience, indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes his inner character and moral values from him, not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
