David and Goliath

I love the story of David and Goliath in the Bible. There are so many life applications we can pull out of this one event. I want to share with you what stands out to me and how I apply it to my life.

David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17

V. 3 The enemy had formed a battle stance. They were ready to fight. How many times do we face situations and we know the situation is trying to destroy us? It is not playing and it is out for blood. Many times we can sense demonic attacks that feel relentless in our lives.

V. 4-7 Goliath was no normal enemy. He was a giant and he was specifically trained for battle. There are times we face battles with a huge enemy-not just a regular run of the mill size enemy, but one that is huge and one that is trained and dressed for battle.

V. 8-11 Goliath taunted them and paraded in front of them to create fear, and it worked. How many times does the enemy do the exact same thing with us? When we start to focus on the giant in our lives and start noticing how big it is, how it is dressed for battle, and how strong it is we start to allow fear to come in.

V. 16 Goliath taunted them for 40 days. Then enemy is relentless and does not give up. His goal is to get us scared enough that we give up, get bitter, and live defeated lives.

V. 26 David wanted to know who dared to stand against the army of God. He refused to allow the giant to mock God and the people of God.

V. 32 He was not afraid. He knew His God and that caused him to walk in total confidence. He was not shaken by the circumstances because he had a firm foundation in his relationship with God. He knew God would not and could not fail him.

V. 34-37 God had already prepared him for this fight. He did not come to this battle unprepared. God had a plan for Davids entire life. He was with him and preparing him for each stage of his life.

David knew that he had already been prepared by God for this fight. He looked back over his life and saw how God had already prepared him for this very moment.

We could be standing in battle with a weapon at our feet and yet not even realize it is there. If our focus is only on the enemy we may not even see that we have been prepared for this battle and we have weapons to walk in victory.

We so often don’t look back and see what the Lord has brought us through and how He uses the situations to equip us.

Sometimes we just need to look back and take stock of what God has brought us through. What has He taught us? What has He equipped us with?

V. 39-40 He could not wear Saul’s armor because it didn’t fit him.

He could not use someone else’s weapons or wear their armor because they didn’t fit. He couldn’t even move in them much less fight with them on. He didn’t need Saul’s armor because he had the armor of God and the weapon that God had used to train him with.

What has God trained you with? What are your weapons?

Are you trying to pick up someone else’s armor and weapons and make them fit for you?

Someone else’s giftings, anointings and weapons will never fit our lives.

We must operate in the ones that God has given us. He has equipped each one of us and we must stop looking at the things He has given others and focus on the ones He has given us.

We must look back over our lives and see how He has equipped us and walk in that equipping, walk in that anointing, walk in that calling. We are who God has created us to be and we cannot look at somebody else and say I want their weapon, their call, their gift.

We must look at our own lives and say okay God what have You called me to do? What have You equipped me with?

V. 40 David picked up 5 stones to use in battle. His weapons must have looked so little and insignificant compared to the ones Goliath had, but David knew the power he carried was not from the stones or the slingshot. His power came from God and nothing is greater than God!

V. 43-44 Goliath taunted David. But David did not respond in fear.

How do we respond when situations taunt us? When we get that doctor’s report we were not expecting? When we get fired from a job? When we face broken relationships?

What about when the enemy starts whispering lies, fear, and doubt?

V. 45-47 David knew that God was going to give him the victory.

V. 48 David ran to battle.

He ran into the battle. Picture that. A small young guy running to face a huge, well-trained giant. One that an entire army was terrified of.

How often do we run to the battle? Or how often do we run, hide, complain, and question? God why is this giant in my life? Why won’t it just move? God do something!

He did not sit on the sidelines hoping the giant would just go away. He did not invite it over to have coffee and a conversation. He did not try to bargain with it.

He did not try to compromise with it.

He did not to try to ignore it and hope it went away.

He did not sulk, cry, or have a pity party for himself or go into a deep depression wondering what was going to happen, wondering if God was going to come through, or wondering when the torment was going to stop.

No! He ran to the battle because he knew his God had prepared him for this exact battle. He knew God had been with him every step of the way so he had zero doubt that God would be with him this time as well.

He had no doubt because he knew who His God was. Do we really know who our God is? Do we really know who we are in Him?

V. 49 David used the stones to kill Goliath.

One powerful weapon that we all have is the Word of God. We can pick it up and hurl it at the enemy’s head the same was David threw the stones at Goliath. God’s Word will hit the mark every single time. It will render the enemy powerless and hit him right between the eyes.

V. 51 David used Goliaths own sword to cut his head off.

The enemy uses his words against us like a sword trying to pierce our heart with his attacks.

We can in turn take his words and turn them around on him by using the truth found in the Word of God.

Example: The enemy says, “you cannot win this battle”, and we use the truth and reply, “that is a lie, because the Word of God says greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. It also says no weapon formed against me will prosper. I am who God says I am. I am mighty through God. I am a child of Jehovah God the Creator of all things and He has equipped me to win this battle through His might!”

We can use the Word of God to cut off the enemies head every single time and take back our territory.

V. 51 When the rest of the enemies saw what happened to Goliath they fled.

Somethings we need to be doing with our battles:

We all have giants in our lives that we need to face down and conqueror, but so many times we may not even recognize what the giant really is. We may be calling it something else.

We must ask ourselves what giants are in my life? Get specific with the battle. What is the giant’s name? What is its agenda?

What are my weapons?

Run to battle. We cannot sit on the sidelines, and we cannot hide from the fight.

Allow this battle, and victory, to prepare you for the next one.

Praise God when He leads you to the victory!

Are you ready to fight? Take back your peace, joy, hope, home, family, church, community, and nation for the kingdom of God!
