Words We Speak

Do the words that we speak line up with the Word of God? Are we speaking truth or repeating lies the enemy (demons) have whispered to us? Are we speaking faith or fear? Doubt or trust? Do we speak through the lens of knowing the truth found in God’s Word?

We can create blessings and curses over our lives, and the lives of others with the words we speak. Words are powerful and they really matter. We may think we are just venting or “getting it out” but the Word of God warns about being very careful about the things we speak. If you ever wonder how powerful words are remember God created the entire world with His spoken words. I am not saying our words are the same as His, but our words do matter and they can create life and death, cursing and blessing over ourselves and those we are talking about. The Bible is full of scripture telling us to be very mindful of the things we speak.

These are just a few examples:

Proverbs 18:21 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words. James 1:26 26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious [scrupulously observant of the rituals of his faith], and does not control his tongue but deludes his own heart, this person’s religion is worthless (futile, barren).

Proverbs 21:23 23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue Guards himself from troubles.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. James 3:8-10 But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Matthew 15:11 It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” James 3:10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Matthew 12:36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

I used to be a very negative person. I was critical, negative, and was proud to always speak my mind, but when God started doing a massive work in my heart my words was one of the very first things He brought to my attention. I could no longer be comfortable with the words that flowed so easily out of my mouth. It was time to speak life and not death.

He quickly led me to the scripture in Philippians 4:8 that shows us what we should think on and what we should speak. The scripture pierced my heart because I knew for years I had not spoken these things. I had allowed anger, fear, death, negativity, and the lies of the enemy enter my daily vocabulary. As soon as I read the scripture I knew my life would never be the same and I knew it really should be the measure for the words that we all allow to flow out of our lips.

Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]. Philippians 4:8.

May our hearts cry out to the Lord, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable and pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my [firm, immovable] rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14.
