Closing Doors to Demons and Removing them From Your Home

The first thing I want to point out is you are not being visited by a ghost. Even if what you are seeing looks like someone you know or knew it is not them. Many times demons will come in the form of deceased loved ones. They may even know a lot of information about them, but that is because they watched them, so they know a lot about them. They may have been watching the entire family for years. Do not engage with them or fall for their tricks.

There are a few different reasons you may be experiencing demonic activity in your home. You may have objects in your home that is attracting them and giving them access to your home. Occult/pagan items (décor, books, movies, tv shows, games, jewelry, etc.) create an open door to your house for the enemy. It is like opening the door wide open and laying out a welcome mat for them. Another issue could be they are there because of something that previously happened in the home or the previous owners. They could also just be trespassing with no legal rights to be there, or you could need personal deliverance (canceling legal rights and casting them out in the name of Jesus) because they are attached to you and not the home.

Steps to Spiritual House Cleaning

Step One: Remove Items from Your Home

The list below includes games, books, entertainment, movies, magazines, décor, jewelry, toys, and music.

Any occult involvement: Even if you view these things as innocent entertainment, they are very dangerous and can create major demonic legal rights to your life and home. The enemy (demons) do not care what significance you place on these things, all they care about is if it gives them legal rights to your life and home. There are numerous scriptures in the Bible that forbid our involvement with anything related to the occult, paganism, witchcraft, idols (other gods), and sorcery. These are just a few of them: Leviticus 19:31; Leviticus 20:6; Revelation 21:8; Isaiah 8:19; Revelation 22:15; Galatians 5: 19-21; Deuteronomy 18: 9-14; Micah 5:12; 2 Kings 23:24; Acts 19: 18-20; Colossians 2:8; Deuteronomy 7:25–26; Acts 16:16-18; Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 20:27; 2 Chronicles 33:6; 1 Chronicles 10:13-14; 2 Kings 21:6; 2 Kings 17:17 and Nahum 3:4.

1 Corinthians 10:21 You cannot drink [both] the Lord’s cup and the cup of demons. You cannot share in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons [thereby becoming partners with them].

Examples of items to remove: Ouija boards, Magic 8 Ball, levitation games, seances, fortune tellers, tarot cards, astrology, horoscopes, zodiac signs, fascination with books about magic, psychics, seers, Harry Potter, Pokémon, vampire movies or books, werewolves books or movies, Halloween, Wiccan, witches, candle magic, sex magic, satanic rock music, Bloody Mary ritual, hexes or spells, voodoo, hoodoo, Law of Attraction, mediums, black/white magic, spirit guides, crystals used for magic/power/healing, witchcraft/spells, satanism, palm reading, astral travel, meditation, mindfulness, enneagram, lucky charms, demon worship, angel worship, angel cards, angel numbers, clairvoyance/seeing the future, New Age, candle magic, hypnotism, taking oaths, dabbling in the occult out of curiosity, fairies, wizards, new age toys, burning sage/smudging, dream catchers, pagan beliefs or practices, energy healing, Reiki, chakras, opening the third eye, Eastern religions, acupuncture, mermaids/sirens, paranormal activity, ghost, haunted houses, magical unicorns, reincarnation, past life regression, seeking contact with aliens, enlightenment, higher level of conscienceless, energy reading/healing, vibes, ascended masters, channeling, third eye, meditation (on anything other than the Word of God), drumming circles, goddesses, deities, mandalas, manifesting, spirit guides, past lives regression, singing bowls, smudging with sage, dream catchers, sweat lodge rituals, shamanism, witch doctors, pentagrams, Disney movies and toys with magic, Dungeons and Dragons, Yoga, power animals (animal spirit), Masonry, Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, Oddfellows, Rebecca Lodge, Elk, Mormon, Gurus, Islam, Spiritism, Hinduism, Shriner, Christian Science, Jehovah’s Witness, Scientology, Buddhism, other secret groups or false religions, Anime that has magic or graphic sexual content,  Superheroes (many are false gods who have magical powers), philology that is ungodly, humanism, Greek mythology (gods, goddesses) deities and any other type of deities.  

When in doubt research the origins of everything you allow into your life and home.

Other Items to Remove

Any items connected to sinful behaviors should be removed. For example, pornography, fornication, sexual perversion/sin, alternative lifestyles, romance novels that have sexual content, drugs, drug paraphernalia, prejudice/racist attitudes, abortion, gambling, addictions, etc.

If you have any of the items from either list remove them immediately and take them outside of your home. I suggest burning or destroying them, but either way make sure to get rid of them and do not sell them or give them away. We do not want to pass on any items that the enemy can use to torment anyone else.

**Do not forget to go through your kids’ toys, music, and other items. If you live with a spouse who is not on board purge your personal items, and then pray for your spouse to see the truth. You can remove the legal rights to your personal life, but if they will not allow you to purge your home the demons will still have a legal right to be there, and you will need to stay diligent in spiritual warfare.

Step Two: Repentance and Commanding the Demons to Leave

After you get rid of the items repent for having them in your home. After you have repented verbally tell any demons that were attached to those items that they must leave immediately in the name of Jesus. They are no longer welcome, there are no more legal rights for them to be there and they must go. Take a firm stance and take your home back. Treat them the same way you would any intruder. That is your home, and they do not belong there. Your home is a place of peace and rest, and they must leave.

Example: “Listen demons I have cleaned my home out and there is nothing left here that is giving you legal rights to my life. You are a trespasser, and you do not belong here. This is my house! This is my property, given to me by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and you are not welcome. Right now, in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ I command you to get out and do not come back. The door to my home is closed and sealed with the blood of Jesus. This home is dedicated to God, and this is His house, not yours. You may not remain, you may not try to bring fear, you may not linger here any longer. You may not enter this door ever again. I command every single unclean spirit to leave now in the name of Jesus Christ. The Word of God gives me authority over you, and you must obey in the name of Jesus. The Word says you belong under my feet and that you are subject to me. I come in the name of Jesus Christ and the power in the Word of God. I submit to God, I resist you (demons), and now according to God’s Word you will flee. No weapon you form against me will prosper. I hold up the shied of faith around my life, my home, and my family and it will resist every single fiery dart you try to throw at me! I send those darts right back into your camp! In the name of Jesus this torment stops now.”  

Pray over any preowned items (this does not work for items that have an occult or pagan nature) that you have in your home and verbally break off anything that may be attached to them. For example, “Lord, I pray that you would cancel any demonic attachment to any items in my home. I pray Your blood would flow over them in the spiritual realm and make them null, void, and powerless. I thank You for working in my life and home. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen”

Pray over your property and do this often, not just one and done. Anoint your home with oil. I like to put the oil at every doorway, window, and entrance. I pray for the Lord’s protection as I am anointing them, and I also bind demons from entering in the name of Jesus. I put them on notice that every entry point is covered, and they may not cross the line of my property. I often speak the name of Jesus and plead the blood of Jesus over my home, thresholds, doorways, and property.

Denounce and renounce any invitations that you have personally made to demons. You can say something like this: “I renounce and denounce any invitation to my home for all demons that I made either knowingly or unknowingly. You are no longer welcome here. You are now a trespasser. The blood of Jesus is against you. I command you to leave my property right now in the name of Jesus. You are not welcome here and you must go.”

Break and cancel agreement with anything that could have happened there in the past. You can do this by praying and asking God to break any demonic strongholds that occupy your property and for Him to cancel any demonic agreements, pledges, ungodly covenants, and assignments over the property and then ask for the blood of Jesus to cover them making them null, void, and powerless. Once you pray then verbally say something like: “I break, cancel, and demolish any demonic contracts, covenants, agreements, and assignments over this property in the name of Jesus. This home is covered by the blood of Jesus, and it does not matter what happened here in the past because Jesus covers the past, the present, and my future. Your time here is over, and you must leave in the name of Jesus.”  

Dedicate your home to the Lord and verbally say it will be a house of prayer and then use it for a house of prayer. Play praise and worship music, verbally pray, and speak scriptures throughout your home.  

Joshua 24:15 If it is unacceptable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”  

Be diligent and consist in taking your house back. Speak scriptures in your home and use it as place of prayer, praise, and worship. Demons will always try to push their boundaries. If we give them an inch they will take a mile, so it is important to confront them every single time they try to enter your home and every time they try to torment you.

Don’t Do

Smudging or any type of New Age Practice/Occultic/Witchcraft/Paganism: These practices will actually attract demons and not expel them. The only way to make demons leave is through the authority of Jesus Christ. If you are trying any other method, it will not work. God/Jesus/Holy Spirit are the only ones who have authority over the demons, and they give us that authority to use over them as well.

If you try all the above and it does not work, ask God to show you the open door and what is causing the issue. If it persists you may need personal deliverance (legal rights removed from your life and the demons verbally cast out in the name of Jesus) or someone else in your home may be inviting them in with their life or items. The demons can obtain legal rights to be in your home, in your body, or both. House cleaning is one step of the preparation for a personal deliverance session. Just as you closed the doors in your home you can also close those doors to your life and command the demons to leave if they have taken up residence in your body (mind, will, emotions, flesh).

Also, it will only work if you are in a real relationship with Jesus Christ. We cannot use His authority unless we have a personal relationship with Him and are striving to live a Biblical life.

I want to address one more thing in this post. When I teach on the topic of closing demonic doors I often get accused of being legalistic and/or being in fear of demons. Closing doors to demons is neither of these things. One, is it not legalist to avoid the things the Bible clearly tells us, as Christians, to avoid. It is living a Biblical life.

Two, I do not fear demons. I used to live in constant fear of them because I had no idea why I was in so much torment or how to make it stop. Once the Lord taught me how to use the weapons of warfare, He has given us to fight against them, I no longer had to live in fear.

One of those weapons is keeping the doors of my life closed to the demons.

I will never feel bad about teaching on this topic, and I will never stop unless God tells me to. I answer to Him and Him alone. In my opinion this topic needs talked about more because so many Christians are living in constant demonic torment and bondage.
