Word Curses and Inner Vows

Word Curses

Word curses are spoken words from parents, doctors, friends, ministers, spouses, those in authority over you, yourself, or others that were said with condemnation. We can also speak word curses over others and not really even understand the power of the words we are speaking.

Some examples of words that can create curses over ourselves, and others, are:

“You are fat, you are stupid, you will never amount to anything, you always mess up, I don’t know why we had you, you do not belong or fit in, you were born to suffer, you will never have children, you will always be sick, I might as well die, I would be better off if I was never born, you are not as good as other people, you will never be as good as them, I hate myself, I will never get better, etc.”

These types of words can create curses in our lives. Life and death are in our words and when spoken with authority they can create curses in our lives that must be broken.

Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their word.”

From the same mouth we can speak blessings or curses:

James 3:9 “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God.”

We may even do this unknowingly because we may have a tendency to speak negativity and we just feel like that is the way we are.

Breaking Word Curses

Make a list of curses others have spoken over you and ones you have spoken over yourself. Next you need to forgive each person, including yourself.

The curses can be broken by praying the following (this is just an example prayer, always pray as the Spirit leads):

“I break agreement with, and renounce all word curses, either spoken over me by others or that I have spoken over myself. Forgive me Lord for believing the lies that these curses have truth. Forgive me for living in bondage to them. Forgive me for any bitter judgments I made about myself and others because of them. I pray You would break the curses and cancel all assignments and strategies of the enemy attached to those curses making them null, void, and powerless. I pray You would break the power of those words and attitudes and their influence over my life in the name of Jesus. I also pray You would forgive me and break any word curses I have spoken over others. Father I am truly sorry for every careless word that has ever come out of my mouth. Please cleanse my mouth, my heart and my words in the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.”

Inner Vows

Inner vows usually result from negative experiences in life and they are declarations or promises we make ourselves. They will usually come true even if we do not really mean them. Life and death are in the power of our tongue. We can create these vows over our lives and then suffer the consequences of them because they are the same as signing a legal contract over our lives in the spiritual realm.

Matthew 12:37 “for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

For example “Because people have hurt me I will never trust again. All men are bad so I will never find a good one. I will be alone for the rest of my life. People always let me down so I will never let anyone get close to me. I am the only one I can depend on. I will never get anywhere in life so I am done trying. I will never let anyone control me. I will always look perfect. God let me down so I cannot trust Him.”

To Break the Inner Vows Verbally Pray (this is just an example prayer, always pray as the Spirit leads):

“Forgive me, Lord, for having made these vows (list them). Please break the power of every word I vowed making them null, void, and powerless. I rebuke all demons assigned to bring these vows to pass in my life in the name of Jesus. I forgive myself for having made these vows. I now release my will, authority, and power over this part of my life and willingly give it back to You Lord to be under Your will, authority, and power. I receive freed in the name of Jesus. Thank you, Lord.”

Speak Life, Not Death

Our words matter, our attitudes matter, and what is in our hearts matter. We must learn to speak life, and not death over others and ourselves. We are going to be held accountable for the words we speak.

Matthew 12:36 But I tell you, on the day of judgment people will have to give an accounting for every careless or useless word they speak.

If this is an area you struggle with the first step is repentance, the next step is asking the Lord to help you change from the inside out (thoughts, words) and the third step is discipling yourself to be careful and think about every word you speak.

This verse should be the filter for our thoughts and words.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].
